On Saturday evening, 1. FC Köln is a guest at Borussia Mönchengladbach. This is what Steffen Baumgart’s personnel situation looks like at the start of the derby preparations.

Starting signal for derby week! 1. FC Köln is back on the training ground and has been preparing for the Rhineland cracker at Borussia Mönchengladbach (Saturday, 6.30 p.m., Sky & EXPRESS.de live ticker) since Tuesday morning (April 12, 2022).

And at the start there was good news for head coach Steffen Baumgart (50): regular right-back Benno Schmitz (27) finally trained with the team again after a thigh injury and a Corona break. Sebastian Andersson (30), who was also absent ill, completed at least one individual session.

“For Benno today it was about reintegrating him into the team, that went well. We assume that he will be fully involved on Wednesday. Seb has one or two more examinations that go with it, then it should go again,” says Baumgart.

Jeff Chabot and Ondrej Duda stop training

The coach only had to do without Kingsley Schindler (28, private reasons), so his wish for a 3-2 win against Mainz (“That we don’t have to replace six people every week, but that everyone is there”) is almost completely fulfilled fulfilled.

Or are new worries waiting? Jeff Chabot (24) and Ondrej Duda (27) had to go into the cabin early on Tuesday. Baumgart: “Jeff felt unsteady when moving sideways, we want to clarify that. Dudi also had a few problems, so we sent them both in. But both have been training, so I assume it’s not that dramatic.”

1. FC Köln with a lot of away support in Gladbach

In the spectacular home threesome against Mainz on Saturday (April 9, 2022), the FC coach not only had to do without Andersson, Schmitz and Schindler, but the suspended Jan Thielmann (19) and Timo Hübers (25) were just spectators. Salih Özcan (24) slipped into the squad from the corona quarantine at the last minute. “It’s about time everyone got back together. We have seen in the last few weeks how important this is,” says Baumgart.

Full FC rows in training – and in the stands! The Baumgart team can look forward to loud support on the Lower Rhine: On Monday morning, a surprising number of thousands of tickets went on sale in advance, especially for the away block there were umpteen tickets to be gotten – which many FC fans took advantage of.

Up to 10,000 Cologne residents are expected in Gladbach. Normally, guests at Borussia Park are only entitled to around 5,200 tickets. On Tuesday morning the derby was almost sold out.
