The federal government has launched a package of laws intended to accelerate the expansion of green electricity from the sun and wind. According to information from government circles, the cabinet approved a corresponding proposal by Climate Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) on Wednesday.

By 2030, the share of green electricity in gross electricity consumption should increase to 80 percent. That would almost double it. However, the FDP agreed in the cabinet only with the proviso that further details would be clarified during the deliberations in the Bundestag. This was recorded in a letter accompanying the cabinet decision.

“The Easter package is the biggest energy policy amendment in decades,” says RTL information from government circles about this package of immediate energy measures. The Federal Ministry of Economics is planning to adapt numerous laws to counter both the climate crisis and dependence on Russian oil and gas.

Renewable energies in “overriding public interest”

According to RTL information, the legislative package is intended to systematically promote the expansion of renewable energies. According to government circles, the goal is for electricity in Germany to come almost entirely from renewable energies by 2035.

According to RTL information, the Ministry of Economic Affairs is building on numerous changes in the law with its Easter package in order to promote the expansion of wind power on land and at sea and to provide more space for photovoltaic systems. According to RTL information, the removal of bureaucratic hurdles, network expansion and the strengthening of end customer rights are also part of the more than 500-page, so-called Easter package.

Habeck describes the Easter package as “a huge thing”

The bundle of projects was “a huge thing” for his ministry, Habeck said on Tuesday. It comprises 56 individual laws and measures. The biggest chunk is the new Renewable Energy Sources Act.

The federal government consisting of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP want to massively push ahead with the expansion of renewable energies and now accelerate this project under the impression of the tense relations with the important energy supplier Russia. If the legislative package is passed in the cabinet, it goes to the parliamentary legislative procedure in the Bundestag. (phs, swi/ with dpa)
