Kim Clijsters: Four-time Grand Slam winner ends tennis career

Four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters retired at the age of 38. This is the third time that the Belgian has turned her back on professional sport – and in future she will only be a spectator.

The four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters ended her career. The 38-year-old Belgian announced this on social media. “I want to let you know that I have decided not to compete anymore,” wrote Clijsters, whose family focus is as a mother of three.

“I still love it”

The former world number one had already turned her back on professional sports twice, in 2007 and 2012. Clijsters returned last in 2020 and, among other things, had the again without success US Open played, which she won in 2005, 2009 and 2010.

Also with them Australian Open Clijsters held the trophy up in the air in 2011. She completed her last match in October 2021 in Indian Wells. “I still love hitting the ball,” said Clijsters now. In the future, however, she will only appear as a spectator at WTA tournaments.
