Mockery of Merkel’s trip to Florence: Melnyk: All Russians are now our enemies

Mockery of Merkel’s trip to Florence
Melnyk: All Russians are now our enemies

The Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin is not known for deliberative tones. In times of war, Melnyk minces even less. “All Russians are our enemies right now,” he says in an interview. There is outrage on Twitter, but also understanding.

The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, caused discussions on social media with an interview statement and a message on Twitter about hostility towards all Russians. In an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, Melnyk said: “I will say it very clearly: Russia is an enemy state for us. And all Russians are enemies for Ukraine at the moment.” That could change. “But at the moment we don’t have time to ask: Are you against Putin or for him – or maybe you only partially understand?”

Melnyk published on Twitter this morning: “All Russians are now our enemies” (“All Russians are now our enemies”) and referred to his interview. Twitter users then warned of escalations and “rigid friend-foe thinking”. Although the actions of Russian soldiers are to be despised and a “frightening majority” of Russians support the war, generalizations should not be made. There was also some support for Melnyk with reference to his further interview statements.

In the interview, Melnyk continued: “It can’t be about distinguishing between bad Russians and good Russians now.” Because Russia is at war with Ukraine. “It’s not Putin who murdered people in Bucha. They were specific people from different regions of Russia. They have their relatives, they call home, they loot houses. We have thousands of phone calls that we recorded as evidence for the war tribunal ‘ Melnyk said.

Invitation to Bucha: Merkel travels to Florence

Some would be sent to this war, some made the decision of their own free will: “Because they want to destroy Ukraine. And that’s why it’s clear to me, probably after the war, that Russia will remain an enemy state,” said Melnyk. Ukraine will probably remain an enemy of Russian society for a long time: “That’s because Russian propaganda has been in overdrive since the annexation of Crimea.”

Also in the morning, Melnyk sarcastically commented on a “Bild” report, according to which former Chancellor Angela Merkel was strolling through Florence in spring-like temperatures. The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously invited Merkel to the Kiev suburb of Bucha. “Sure, there are no murdered women and children lying on the streets in Florence. But there is so much art and culture. Wonderful,” wrote the Ukrainian ambassador.
