Neither iPhone nor Samsung: This cell phone takes the best photos

In our camera blind test, we showed you various motifs, each photographed with different smartphones. You voted which picture you like the most without knowing which photo was taken from which mobile phone. Here is the result at a glance:

We have calculated the winners for you in two different ways – once using the points system (first place gets five points, second place two, …) and once by cumulating all the votes. While the distances between the candidates vary depending on the calculation method, the order is the same: The Google Pixel 6 Pro comes out on top with a decent lead.

To get you in the mood for the following pictures and the individual results, here you can find the participants in the blind test and their camera equipment at a glance:

Just a reminder: the Google Pixel 6 Pro already had on ours last camera blind test in November 2021 – and had to admit defeat to the iPhone 13 Pro at the time. In the end, just 17 votes made the difference. But apparently the software updates from Google have paid off in the past few weeks and months.

Below you will find our motifs and photo series from the original camera blind test. In the captions, we finally tell you which photo comes from which smartphone.

Scene 1: Daylight, main camera

Our blind test started with the supposedly simplest exercise: daylight and the main camera. Here, the iPhone 13 Pro was able to prevail over Xiaomi and Oppo. It is noticeable here that many smartphones deliver colder recordings, while Apple uses a slightly warmer tone.

  • 1st place: iPhone 13 Pro
  • 2nd place: Xiaomi 12 Pro
  • 3rd place: Oppo Find X5 Pro

Scene 2: Daylight, 3.3x zoom

As rarely as the sun’s rays over the past week, the OnePlus 10 Pro ranked first in our blind test. But both worked here. However, the differences between the recordings are relatively small, and the result was therefore quite close.

  • 1st place: OnePlus 10 Pro
  • 2nd place: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
  • 3rd place: Xiaomi 12 Pro

Motif 3: Daylight, 5x zoom

The iPhone 13 Pro by no means has the best prerequisites for telephoto zoom tasks, but surprisingly it does the best here. The next places are followed by the Pixel 6 Pro and the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which I would have expected before Apple – you too?

  • 1st place: iPhone 13 Pro
  • 2nd place: Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • 3rd place: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Motif 4: “Daylight”, 10x zoom

Finally, the tenfold zoom plays Samsung fully into the cards. Finally, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 10x telephoto lens on board, which can take photos here with native resolution. It is astonishing, however, that the iPhone 13 Pro is also at the forefront here – even ahead of the Pixel 6 Pro, which, at least on paper, has significantly better zoom capabilities.

  • 1st place: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
  • 2nd place: iPhone 13 Pro
  • 3rd place: Google Pixel 6 Pro

Scene 5: daylight, ultra wide angle

In our fifth motif, the photo of the iPhone also stands out again. It’s a tad warmer than most of its competitors’ images, and most importantly, the building in the flesh image is significantly brighter. I like it, and obviously you do too!

  • 1st place: iPhone 13 Pro
  • 2nd place: Xiaomi 12 Pro
  • 3rd place: Oppo Find X5 Pro

Motif 6: daylight, maximum resolution

A lot helps a lot? Not necessarily! The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers the highest resolution on paper. In practice, however, the 50-megapixel sensors from Oppo and OnePlus have convinced you more in terms of detail reproduction.

  • 1st place: Oppo Find X5 Pro
  • 2nd place: OnePlus 10 Pro
  • 3rd place: Xiaomi 12 Pro

Motif 7: indoors, main camera

The iPhone performs best for our first subject with poor lighting conditions. Differences between the various smartphones can be seen here, for example, in the detail reproduction in the dark image areas, such as the stones around the tracks.

  • 1st place: iPhone 13 Pro
  • 2nd place: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
  • 3rd place: Oppo Find X5 Pro

Motif 8: Indoor shot, 2x zoom

Our next motif was an endurance test for the participants. The only light here came from a pair of very warm incandescent bulbs tucked away behind a corner of the wall. The Pixel 6 Pro managed to get the white balance most neutral here – and was voted first place by a clear margin.

  • 1st place: Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • 2nd place: Apple iPhone 13 Pro
  • 3rd place: OnePlus 10 Pro

Scene 9: Indoor shot, ultra wide angle

The Pixel 6 Pro is again ahead in the next motif. Google simply got the hang of white balancing under artificial light and delivered one of the most neutral results here. In addition, the light cone of the lamp on the ceiling is not reduced to a pale glow by an overzealous HDR mode.

  • 1st place: Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • 2nd place: Oppo Find X5 Pro
  • 3rd place: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Motif 10: night, main camera

The night motif was a surprise for me: The Xiaomi 12 Pro was able to clearly assert itself here. While the iPhone 13 Pro clearly dominated the night photos in our last blind test, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the Find X5 Pro and the Pixel 6 Pro are now also passing.

  • 1st place: Xiaomi 12 Pro
  • 2nd place: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
  • 3rd place: Oppo Find X5 Pro

Motif 11: Night, 3x zoom

In this twilight scene, photographed with the triple zoom, Apple and Samsung are again at the forefront. The challenge here was to capture the high contrast between the light panels and the surroundings in low light conditions.

  • 1st place: Apple iPhone 13 Pro
  • 2nd place: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
  • 3rd place: Google Pixel 6 Pro

Scene 12: Night, ultra wide angle

Three times light, three times dark. The lighting conditions for subject 12 were identical to those for subject 10, but we took the picture with the ultra-wide-angle instead of the main camera. The Google Pixel 6 Pro was able to assert itself here by a huge margin.

  • 1st place: Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • 2nd place: Apple iPhone 13 Pro
  • 3rd place: Oppo Find X5 Pro

Motif 13: portrait, daylight

After sport: My crumpled face was really not an easy task for the portrait modes here. You liked the neutral look of the Pixel 6 Pro best here, followed by Oppo and Xiaomi. I find it exciting how different the various smartphones separate the foreground and background from each other.

  • 1st place: Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • 2nd place: Oppo Find X5 Pro
  • 3rd place: Xiaomi 12 Pro

Motif 14: Selfie, artificial light

For the selfies under nasty artificial light – by the way, the same lighting as with Motiv 8, only closer – you chose the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the Pixel 6 Pro for the first two places. And then nothing comes for a long time. The two smartphones create by far the most neutral reproduction – the iPhone 13 Pro, on the other hand, apparently drank self-tanner. Admittedly, the light bulbs are really very warm.

  • 1st place: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
  • 2nd place: Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • 3rd place: OnePlus 10 Pro

Motif 15: selfie, bokeh

The last motif was about selfies with a bokeh effect – and here the OnePlus 10 Pro was able to celebrate one of its rare victories. With 38 percent, the smartphone collected almost twice as many votes as the Find X5 Pro in second place.

  • 1st place: OnePlus 10 Pro
  • 2nd place: Oppo Find X5 Pro
  • 3rd place: Xiaomi 12 Pro
