Three politicians from the traffic light coalition traveled to Ukraine

While Steinmeier’s visit to Ukraine fell through on Tuesday three high-ranking members of the Bundestag arrived in Lviv. They all call for more speed in arms deliveries.

Three leading parliamentarians from the traffic light coalition traveled to Ukraine on Tuesday – not in the capital Kyiv, but in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. There, the chairmen of the committees on foreign affairs, defense and Europe – Michael Roth (SPD), Marie Agnes Strack Zimmermann (FDP) and Anton Hofreiter (Greens) – Members of the Ukrainian Parliament Rada meet. All three politicians had recently called for more speed in arms deliveries.

It is the highest-ranking German politicians who have been visiting Ukraine since the start of the war seven weeks ago. The SPD member of the Bundestag was already in the past week Frank Schwabe with a delegation from the Council of Europe. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had already traveled to Kyiv as the European representative.

A planned visit by the Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier however, does not take place. According to Steinmeier, the Polish President Andrzej Duda suggested in the past few days that they travel to Kyiv together with the heads of state of the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia (Read more about it here). However, Steinmeier’s participation was rejected by the Ukrainian government.
